Religious Formation Vision Statement

Through creative collaboration, thoughtful research and decisive action, St. Joseph’s Religious Formation seeks to pursue the mission of the Catholic Church.

That mission is to share the message of Jesus Christ through scripture, education and reflection upon His life and how it relates to our own lives.

Our walk with Christ starts prior to our birth because we are created in His likeness and image. Therefore, we all deserve the love and respect due all God’s children as taught to us by Jesus’ example of unconditional love.

Our faith journey is marked by special events known as sacraments, and is ongoing without end.

Besides the sacraments, our travels are marked by the hopeful recognition that we, by virtue of our baptism are called to serve others

Can You Relate…?

Pentecost   When I read the first reading today, it thrilled me because I experienced something that I believe was similar to what happened at Pentecost…let me share; When I was in Jerusalem, we were walking down a street when all of a sudden we heard a great noise…not sure where it was coming from, we followed it. We ended up at the Upper Room where Jesus gathered with his disciples on different occasions as well as Pentecost.  When we got into the upper room, most of the people I was with just wanted to get out, it was loud with lots of people…and scary ( as some said to me afterwards) , so they left. I on the other hand wanted to stay…to me. it was fascinating.  I stood back at first and witnessed what was happening….there was  laying on of hands, speaking in tongues, chanting, people falling and being caught by those around them…it was as if the Holy Spirit was having a ball (visibly alive) with the people who randomly gathered here at this time and place and then… they drew me in…I walked into the crowd and saw that people were crying and laughing at the same time…they were praising God in a way that was electric. It was incredible because these people were ON FIRE for the Lord, and I was privileged enough to be a part of this! Wow. Then, after about 10 minutes of this whirlwind…it was like the Spirit spoke to everyone at the same time…and said “hush now” because  each person put their hand on the persons shoulder(s) standing around them …and everyone went completely silence. Silently I (we) prayed in thanksgiving for God and I (we) prayed for the strengthening of the Spirit in one another. After this, it was over, and everyone walked outside into what appeared to be a courtyard of sorts…and there was hugging and smiles and joy abundant.  God’s love was overflowing.  A once in a lifetime experience.

When I reflect back on this event and the Gospel, I think about the people I was with and how they were fearful to be there, kind of like Jesus disciples…right? But this did not last long…because Jesus made sure they received his Spirit before He left them. Jesus knew they needed to internalize Him so that they would go forth being His Body (parts) here on the earth. Oh gosh, it is so beautiful…Can you relate…?

B’Shalom,     Laura

Children’s Liturgy of the Word:

Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place on Sunday during the 10:00 and 12:00 Masses. It does not meet during the summer months (June, July or August). After the opening blessing, the children are released to follow the ministry team in a procession to the Chapel. The children return shortly after the Prayers of the Faithful.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is open to all children from Kindergarten through 3rd grade, and provides the Liturgy of the Word and the Homily at an age-appropriate level. The format consists of the first reading, responsorial psalm, the gospel reading, a homily, the creed and the prayers of the faithful.

It is conducted by a team of 3-5 adult volunteers, as well as older student involvement. The teams rotate on a weekly basis.

All volunteers are required to have a background check and participate in a Protecting God's Children workshop session.

Registration is not required,

 Nursery:

Family Co-operative nursery is available during the school year at the 10:00 Mass. It is for children 18 months to 4 years old. There is a limit of 16 children per week, with parent volunteer children being guaranteed placement.

Parents may place their child in the Nursery to play with other children their own age. The parents are then able to paricipate in Mass. Parents drop their child(ren) off 10 minutes prior to 10:00 Mass and pick them up at the conclusion of Mass.

All children must be signed-up and signed-in in order to utilize the Nursery. There is no fee required. The Nursery is located at Enctrance "C" near the Activity Center and the Religious Formation wing of the Church.

The Nursery is staffed with 5 teams that rotate weekly. Every team has at least 2 adult volunteers and approximately 1 student volunteer.

All volunteers are required to have a background check and participate in a Protecting God's Children workshop session.

Nursery Coordinator is Sharon Maciolek - (734) 748-5471.

October 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians of St Joseph Religious Formation Students,

As long as there has been religious formation programs, they have been viewed as a cooperative effort between parents and the parish. At home, your child(ren) learn from you things like prayers, the way we live our faith, as well as the values we hold dear as Catholic Christians. In the class sessions, we provide an explanation of our teachings, so that your child(ren) can better understand the why’s and how’s of what you teach them. A true team effort. We, the formation staff, and I, look forward to this partnership in the upcoming year, and are here to assist you in whatever ways possible.

This year, there are a few changes you need to be aware of. Many of these changes have come about as a result of the catechist and parent evaluations that were submitted at the end of last session.

Attendance at mass. If the catechesis of our children is to be a truly successful collaborative effort to pass on the faith, we also need to be teaching the same values. Any contradiction is quickly noticed by our children and it undermines our mutual effort. We cannot teach them that God is to be the first priority in their lives (the first commandment), if other things are more important than Sunday Eucharist. It also means that our attempts to teach them about the Lord will be undermined unless your children listen with us to His Word and receive Him in the Eucharist. It also means that connecting what they learn in class to the Sunday Liturgy will be impossible. Participation in Sunday Worship is critical too and necessary for, proper formation. If weekly liturgy has not been a priority for you, we ask that you reconsider the importance of it.

Better communication. The number one concern for parents/guardians and a catechist, in the evaluations was that there was little or no communication between both parties, to the point that they did not even know who their child’s catechist was. Please take the time to stop in and meet your child’s catechist. Also, the catechists will be given their students parents/guardians e-mail address, and are being asked to communicate with you (as a group) as often as possible, to let you know “What’s Happening” in the class. For this reason, it is important that we have your e-mail address. It’s all about better communication!

Community Service. What the children learn in the classroom is wonderful, but it is in knowing how to live what Jesus taught that is of the utmost importance. As in the past, we will continue to do grade level service projects, If you would like to help with a project, have a suggestion for one or would like to lead a project, please let me know. Your input is appreciated.

Finally, I would like to thank you for making Religious Formation a priority. I realize there are times when there are conflicts of schedules…and I thank you for your deciding that your child(rens) formation is lifelong and vitally important to their growth as followers of our Lord Jesus Christ.

B'Shalom and Bright Blessings,

Laura Rector

Parental Covenant

St Joseph Parish * 2012-2013

Parents are always considered the primary catechists for their children in matters of faith. Religious formation classes build on and enrich what you are already doing in the family.

Therefore,

You agree to commit to sharing this responsibility with our faith community here at St. Joseph’s, and to be an integral part of the religious education and formation of your child(ren).

Also, by signing this covenant, you as parents are committed to bringing your child(ren) to religious formation classes and agree to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist on a regular basis..

2012-2013

Introduction:

St. Joseph’s Religious Formation Program strongly supports the primary and

essential role of parents in bringing children into a life of faith. It is by the parents’

Christian example, their participation in the celebration of the Eucharist and their

interest in the children’s formal religious formation classes, that true knowledge and

 faith are developed.

The Religious Formation Program at St. Joseph’s strives to:

Help each individual involved develop a vibrant faith life.

Encourage parents and children to grow in faith together.

Challenge parents to continually grow in their faith as well.

Recognize the gifts we all possess.

Parental Covenant:

You will be asked to sign the attached parental covenant which states that, as primary educators of your children you agree to commit to sharing this responsibility with our faith community and to be an integral part of the religious education and formation of your child(ren). By signing the covenant, you as parents are committed to bring your children to religious formation classes and agree to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist on a regular basis.

Registration and fees:

Any family registered in St. Joseph Parish has the right to enroll their children in the Religious Formation program sponsored by the parish. Registration is on a yearly basis. In order to provide placement and to schedule catechists and aids, the children must be registered within the announced enrollment period. Every attempt will be made to accommodate individual family needs for class time placement. No assurance of placement can be made if children are registered after the enrollment period.

At the time of registration, please notify the Religious Formation Office of any special needs, i.e. any dietary needs, allergies, special learning adaptations or concerns regarding your child.

Each family registered in the St. Joseph Religious Formation Program will be charged a tuition fee, as well as a sacramental preparation fee, if applicable. This fee covers the cost of textbooks and materials not to mention building costs… and may be paid at the time of registration or parishioners will be billed after the program begins. Periodic payments throughout the year would also be fine.

Any family who is financially unable to pay these fees should contact the Director of Religious Formation. A scholarship assistance fund is available for families to draw from, if finances are an issue. If you cannot pay, and would be willing to help out in one of the many volunteer opportunities available, that would be wonderful. No child will be turned away because of inability to pay.

There is no tuition fee for the children of catechist’s.

Tuition fees for 2012-2013 year:

  • $95.00 for 1 child.
  • $155.00 for 2 children
  • $195.00 for 3 or more children.
  • $40.00 - Home Study
  • Pre K and Kindergarten - $50.00
  • $50,00 additional per child for non parishioners.

 Fees for Sacramental preparation:

  • *$50, 00 for First Communion and Reconciliation.
  • *$50.00 for Confirmation

*These fees are to cover the cost of extra books, materials, and events.

Communications

The Rite of Baptism for Infants appropriately refers to parents as the foremost teachers of their children. It is the policy of St. Joseph’s to maintain close communications with the parents as an integral part of the total formation program.

Parents’ values and attitudes reflect their love for the Church and for others. Reverent reception of the Sacraments is an important part of parental teaching. This needs to be communicated by word and action.

Parents are encouraged to visit and help out in the classes, as volunteers are always needed to help with special projects or as substitutes. This is a great way to know what your child(ren) is/are doing in class.

E-mail is now our most requested and direct form of communication. We are asking all parents to submit their e-mail address so that we can communicate to you, important information, updates and reminders. Catechists will also be compiling class e-mail lists and are asked to be in touch with families on a regular basis.

If you do not have an e-mail, a hard copy of all parish sent correspondences will be sent to you by U.S. mail.

Academics:

Occasionally, catechists may send home activities in addition to the student books to be completed. Parents are asked to review the assignments and assist their child in completing them.  Student Supplies:

All students should be prepared for classes by having their materials with them. Lost materials will be replaced at the parent’s cost.

 Sacramental Preparation:

Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation requires that your child be baptized in the Catholic Church or have made a Catholic Profession of Faith. We will need a copy of your child’s Baptismal certificate as soon as possible, unless of course, he/she has been baptized here at St. Joseph’s. All sacramental preparation is a two year commitment.

 First Eucharist:

It is extremely important for your child to come to Mass every week so that he/she knows that celebrating Eucharist is something we do as a community on a regular basis. The word “Eucharist” means thanksgiving. We gather and are thankful for all we have in Jesus, and we are strengthened to be able to continue to live as the Body of Christ. If this has not been your pattern of worship, please take the opportunity to make this a priority. Your example of faith is essential to your child’s life of faith.

Your child will bring home a letter toward the end of October with the dates for the First Eucharist meetings/experiences. It is required that at least one parent attends all meetings and gatherings. At these, you will receive all the information needed to help prepare your child(ren) for First Eucharist and Reconciliation.

You and your child will be expected to attend a meeting in November or December

(depending on your child’s session day and time) where the adults will be more deeply catechized in the sacrament as the candidates for First Eucharist bake bread, after which, you will break the bread together, and in community. Also at this meeting, your child will receive a book called “God’s Gift, Eucharist.” As well as a wonderful mass, prayer and family books. We encourage your child to bring this mass book to liturgy each week, so that they can follow along more closely, and that you use your parent/ family magazine as a tool to help you share the preparation experience together

In addition, On October 23rd. during 10:00 mass, we will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance for those beginning the sacramental process. After this rite, they are officially candidates for the sacraments. It is a wonderful rite that calls on the parents and community for a special blessing. Then, on February 3rd, at 10 am and noon masses, the Rite of Election will take place, and bibles will be handed out. This rite celebrates the candidate’s final preparation for the sacrament. Then finally, there will be a mandatory First Eucharist Parent / Child day on Saturday March 9th.

 First Eucharist Celebration:

Each class is assigned to a particular liturgy, which you will be informed about at the parent / child bread baking meeting.

 First Eucharist Pictures:

For your convenience, a photographer will be at the First Eucharist Parent/Child day to talk with you about First Eucharist pictures. This service was well received last year, so we are continuing it and expanding the days and times. More information as well as scheduling of sessions shot here at St. Joseph’s will be given to you in March.

Reconciliation

The expectation is that your child will receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist, during the second grade year. To quote from Cardinal Maids’s letter regarding this…”It is not enough to provide catechesis for the Sacrament of Penance and allow parents and children to decide whether or not they wish to receive penance; the normal expectation is that everyone be properly prepared and celebrate the Sacrament of Penance.”

The focus of the Sacrament is in celebrating God’s love and forgiveness. Because we experience God’s love in this visible way, it enables us to also become more loving and forgiving. Your child can better understand and appreciate this, if he/she also experiences forgiveness in the family.

As part of the preparation, we will have scheduled a Reconciliation Parent / Child day on Saturday January 12th. This morning will include parent catechesis as well as activities at various stations to help you and your child better understand this Sacrament. We will then offer for the children, a communal penance service (with individual confessions) later in January. You will receive reminders of these dates in November.

During Lent, we will be having a Communal Penance service for our 4th graders and their families, followed by a simple reception. Jesus over and over, talked about the power and importance of forgiveness, so, prior to this event, the children will spend a good amount of time in class talking about this sacrament and its importance in our lives. Because of this special event, we are canceling classes for the 4th graders this week and asking them to come this day instead. More information will be sent home after the New Year.

Confirmation:

Confirmation completes the Sacraments of Initiation and is celebrated in the fall of 9th grade. A student must be a practicing Catholic attending weekly liturgy, and have completed 7th and 8th grade religious formation and Confirmation preparation. Attendance at weekly formation classes is required. Absences are not allowed for Monday sessions, 3 are allowed for traditional weekday session. More than 3 will require make up work. It is expected that all candidates for Confirmation and their parents and/or sponsor attend all required meetings, as well as Confirmation rehearsal.

 Please note*

Grade levels given for sacraments are the minimum guidelines. If your child is not ready, he/she may certainly wait an additional year or so. If you are concerned about their readiness, please speak with the Director of Religious Formation or the Pastor.

 Attendance and Absences:

The Office for Faith Formation/Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Detroit requires all parishes to provide at least 30 class hours of Religious Education per year.

Students should arrive no more than 10 minutes before class time and be picked up promptly at the end of class. For the dismissal of first and second graders, a parent, older sibling, or designated car pool driver must pick up the child from their room. Older children may leave on their own to find their parent or designated driver.

Parents are asked to call your child’s catechist or the Religious Formation Office, when they will be absent and to arrange for makeup work, if any.

 Absences:

Attendance is taken. It is expected that parents will use the same guidelines as you would for your child’s school attendance. If your child must be absent, please inform the catechist or religious education office. Parents should also obtain the missed material from the catechist so that absences will not hinder the child’s progress in class. Excessive absences may necessitate a conference between the Director of Religious Formation and the child’s parents.

 Tardiness:

As scheduled class time is short and moves quickly, it is important that parents make every effort to see that their children arrive on time and plan on staying for the entire class period.

Mass Attendance:

First through eighth grade religious formation class is NOT a substitute for our Sunday obligation to attend liturgy or participate in other sacraments, such as

Reconciliation / Penance. To properly form the youth in the Catholic faith, the religious education process relies upon the children’s ongoing experience of the larger faith community which includes active participation in the Sunday Eucharist, other sacraments and church traditions. Parents make a commitment recognizing the IMPORTANCE of the Sunday Liturgy by signing the covenant at the first parent meeting.

Class Times:

                  Wednesday     6:00 – 7:30 p.m. (Traditional weekly class)

 Inclement Weather Class Cancellation:

If the South Lyon Schools are cancelled due to stormy weather, our faith formation classes will not be in session that day.

If the weather becomes dangerous during the course of the day, we will make a judgment by noon and call the schools to announce that there will be no religious education classes that day.

If severe weather warning has been issued during class time, children will not be allowed to leave the building unless their parent or guardian accompanies them.

 Disciplinary Procedures and Policies:

We are establishing a specific behavior code. We hope that by establishing guidelines for behavior, we will be able to maintain a thoughtful and orderly learning environment. Our intent is to provide our children with a truly spiritual and religious education / formation opportunity.

Child pick up and drop off:

All 1st and 2nd graders must be picked up from the classroom. All other children will be dismissed when the ending bell rings.

Parents who come inside to pick up their child will be asked to wait down by the formation office until the bell rings. This is to avoid disrupting the catechists as they wind up their sessions.

Parking Lot: We realize that schedules are crazy now a days, but please keep in mind that there are children walking through the parking lot…drive slowly and carefully. Please! Just imagine if you are the cause of someone or something getting hurt.

Code of Student Behavior:

It is up to the parents to go over this policy with their child(ren)before sessions begin, and for the catechist to repeat this Code of Student Behavior at the beginning of the year:

  • Students will be polite and respectful toward the teaching staff and other students at all times. There will be no use of abusive or insulting language or any conduct unbecoming a Christian student.
  • No cell phones, IPods or other electronic equipment in class.
  • Students will behave appropriately and respectfully and will not be disruptive in class.
  • Classroom materials are to be used properly, not damaged, destroyed or wasted.
  • Students will not interrupt catechists or other students.
  • Students are to remain in the classroom unless given permission to do otherwise.
  • For the safety of all, no roller blades, skateboards or roller shoes are allowed in the building.
  • Students will come to class prepared. Missed work is to be made up in a timely manner.

Actions Taken To Correct Inappropriate Behavior:

1st offence: Verbal warning from catechist after taking the child aside.

2nd offense: Verbal warning from catechist, and child’s removal from class. They will be taken to the religious formation office for a one on one with the Coordinator or Director of Religious Formation. If a satisfactory solution has occurred, the child will be escorted back to class. Parents will be called and made aware of the situation.

3rd offence: After 3 accumulated class removals; the parents will be called and asked to come in for a conference with the student, parent, teacher and Coordinator and/ or DRF. If the child is not responsive to these actions, the parents will be asked to attend the sessions with their child or the child will be excluded from the program. (We will do all we can to assure this does not happen, however, we need to keep this option open.)

Youth and Family Ministry:

The Youth Ministry Team is a community of youth and adults who share the common goal of living their faith in Jesus and seeking to walk His path. They meet to pray, to learn and to have fun in a way that reinforces their beliefs through their actions, discussions and reflections. Included are high school teens, grades 9 through 12, who meet weekly on Sunday evenings

Parents are always the primary catechist (teacher) for their children in matters of faith. Religious Formation classes build on and enrich what you are already doing in the family.

Remember parents … faith is not taught, so much as it is caught.
