Music Ministry

Excerpt from the USCCB document: Sing to the Lord – Music in Divine Worship

God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song….By its very nature song has both an individual and a communal dimension.  Thus, it is no wonder that singing together in church expresses so well the sacramental presence of God to his people. (1.2.)  Choirs and ensembles comprise persons drawn from the community who possess the requisite musical skills and a commitment to the established schedule of rehearsals and liturgies.  Thus, they are able to enrich the celebration by adding musical elements beyond the capabilities of the congregation alone. (28)

There are several opportunities for parishioners to share their love of music.   These groups are described here.:

Parish Choir

The parish choir currently includes men and women who sing at the 8am weekend Liturgies singing a variety of both traditional and contemporary style SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) music.   They rehearse at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday evenings of each month from September – May.  They also sing for various holy days such as Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday at 8:00 AM.

Voices in Praise Contemporary Ensemble

This ensemble takes "contemporary" to a new level, Currently, guitar & piano, bass, drums and brass accompany a group of mixed voices.  They rehearse at 7pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings of each month from September – May. They lead the 5pm Mass and the Holy Hour on the first saturday of the month, and rotate between the 10am Mass and 5pm weekend masses for the remainder of the month.

Young Adult Ensemble

A recent addition to the music minsitry at St. Joseph consisting of young adults in the parish. They rehearse at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from September - May. Generally, they rotate singing the 10am and 12pm Suinday Masses with an occasional 5pm Saturday Mass as their schedule allows.

Children's Choir

The children’s choir is open to students in grades 2-8. Younger children are welcome with parental supervision during rehearsals and guidance in learning the words to new songs.  They rehease at 5:30pm-6:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Thurday of the month from September - May. They sing twice a month rotating between the 10am and 12pm Sunday Masses. They also sing the 4pm Christmas Eve Mass and the 12pm Easter Sunday Mass.

Cantors

Cantors are appointed by the Director of Music based on one's ability to lead the congregation in song. Cantors rehearse by appointment and must have a working knowledge of general music. The ability to learn a song, psalm, hymn etc. by themself is paramount, as is the ability to sing and speak comfortably in front of large groups.  Anyone intersest in auditioning to be a cantor should contact the Music Director.
